As Taiwan’s presidential election nears, immigrants from Hong Kong are showing their support for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Many of these immigrants moved to Taiwan after the 2019 anti-government protests in Hong Kong and are backing the DPP due to its commitment to preserving Taiwan’s independence and democratic values. Taiwan has become a haven for Hong Kongers seeking free speech and liberties since Beijing imposed a national security law on Hong Kong. However, some Hong Kong immigrants in Taiwan have faced difficulties in obtaining permanent residency due to Taiwan’s concerns over security risks posed by China. Despite these challenges, most Hong Kong immigrants in Taiwan remain steadfast in their support for the DPP.
