One of the mysteries surrounding GLP-1 medications for weight loss is why their effectiveness varies greatly among individuals. A recent study suggests that genetics may hold the answer. Researchers have developed a genetic test called MyPhenome, which assigns a risk score based on 6,000 changes in 22 genes related to GLP-1 hormone signaling. The test can predict with 95% accuracy whether someone will lose more than 5% of their initial weight on injected weight loss medications. By determining the likelihood of success, this test could save people frustration and money, as these medications can be expensive and not always covered by insurance.
