Biniam Girmay, the Eritrean cyclist, made history at this year’s Tour de France by becoming the first Black African rider to win a stage. He hopes to inspire other Black riders to excel in the sport. Growing up in Asmara, Eritrea, Girmay fell in love with cycling while watching the Tour de France on TV. After moving to Switzerland, he joined Intermarche-Wanty in 2021 and has since signed a contract with the team until 2026. Girmay’s success includes winning stages at the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France. He aims to be a symbol for young African cyclists and pave the way for more diversity in the sport.
