OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever has raised $1 billion from investors for his new AI company, Safe Superintelligence (SSI). The company aims to pursue safe superintelligence with a singular focus and goal. Sutskever was OpenAI’s chief scientist and left the company along with his colleague Jan Leike, who joined rival AI firm Anthropic. OpenAI disbanded its Superalignment team after their departures. Sutskever started SSI with Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy, and the company has offices in Palo Alto, California, and Tel Aviv, Israel. Sutskever was also involved in the temporary ouster of OpenAI’s co-founder and CEO Sam Altman. Almost all of OpenAI’s employees signed an open letter saying they would leave in response to the board’s actions, but Altman was later reinstated.
