The EU opens formal probe into TikTok over protection of children
·1 min
The European Union has initiated an investigation into TikTok to assess its efforts in protecting minors and possible violations of the Digital Services Act. The investigation will scrutinize TikTok’s systems, policies, and functionalities related to suspected infringements. The aim is to ensure the company complies with regulations for social media platforms, including measures to prevent addiction and safeguard minors’ privacy and safety. The EU will also examine the effectiveness of TikTok’s age verification tools, transparency on advertisements, and access to data for researchers. Companies found to have violated the rules may face fines up to 6% of their annual revenue. This is the second formal investigation launched by the European Commission against a social media company in recent months.
