Who could buy TikTok?
President Joe Biden has signed legislation that could lead to a ban of TikTok in the United States unless the app’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, sells it. TikTok plans to challenge the law in court, but if unsuccessful, it will need to find a buyer quickly. The search for a suitable new owner may trigger a frenzy of interest from tech companies, retailers, private equity firms, and investment bankers. However, speculation remains as to which potential buyer the US government would view favorably, with some candidates seen as more likely than others. The sale also presents challenges due to China’s opposition to a forced sale of TikTok. Antitrust concerns would be raised if an established tech giant were to purchase the app. Analysts suggest that smaller tech companies or telecommunications firms may face fewer regulatory barriers. Microsoft, having previously shown interest in acquiring TikTok, could present a renewed opportunity, while Oracle is also a potential contender. Former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has announced plans to assemble a team of investors to purchase TikTok, although the specifics of his offer are unclear. Other interested parties include Kevin O’Leary, chairman of private venture capital firm O’Leary Ventures.
